Our Story
Hello, I'm Emma. I've poured my heart and soul into researching this business idea for the last year and now it is here, ready to launch and to serve the people of Newark with beautiful blooms.
What can I say, I love flowers and after having a difficult year in 2023, where we lost my brother in law suddenly, I decided life was very much too short and began questioning everything. The short version is that I decided that after 13 years of self employment running a fairly successful small business that I wasn't in love with it anymore and was just going through the motions. Life is far too precious to waste doing things that you don't love and so Farndon Flower Farm was born.
After thinking long and hard about what I wanted this business to look like (I absolutely have to be self employed, there is no chance i'd hold down any sort of job after answering to no-one but me for 11 years) I realised that work/life balance was important to our family and that I also wanted to spend more time outdoors, moving our bodies and connecting with nature. I have two young children who love being outside and what better way to introduce them to some new skills than drag them along for the ride starting our flower farm.
Reluctantly, my husband Richard also got dragged along for the ride, but he secretly loves it i'm sure, underneath all of the moaning he's loving our new flower farm.
So now I spend my time nurturing seedlings, planting and watering and being dictated to by the weather. In the off season I spend the time planning and evaluating the successes and failures and dreaming of the next spring where I can get back into the field. The crop is totally unpredictable, affected by weather and pests and this is probably the most risky decision going into a sector that is so unpredictable but......i've never been happier. And happiness and family are more important than anything.
Did you know that only 14% of the flowers sold in Britain are grown in Britain? The rest are imported from other countries such as Equador and Columbia. We think of flowers coming from The Netherlands but actually its the flower auctions that are held there, so the flowers may actually have incurred more flight miles than we think. British grown flowers are not only fresher and more long lasting than their foreign cousins but by buying local flowers you are supporting our economy and your local community and another positive is that we don't use pesticides or strong chemicals on our farm like they do in some other countries. Our working practices are much more ethical and we pay our workers (just me at the moment!) a fair wage for the work they do (unlike some other places in the world which don't have our laws).
Thats just a few of the many many reasons to buy local flowers, not to mention the positive effect on our eco-system by us providing valuable food for our pollinators.
2024 is only the start of our journey into flower farming and we have some huge plans for the next few years. Please support our farm by remembering us when you need that special birthday bouquet or anniversary gift. Recommend us to your friends who are getting married and don't forget the mood lifting benefits of having fresh (local) flowers in your home on a regular basis. Studies have proven that mood lifts for 3 days when you have flowers in your home! We are solving depression, one bouquet at a time :-)
Bye for now, flower friends
